ABOUT US:

The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare's mission is to partner with healthcare organizations to advance compassion for patients, care teams, and their healing relationships. We are a Boston-based nonprofit with national and international reach, with approximately 600 hospitals in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand as members, and another 320 hospitals/systems conducting Schwartz Rounds throughout the UK and Ireland. Together, we are helping hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals provide compassionate care to millions of patients and families. The Schwartz Center's strategic priorities for the coming decade include expansion of Schwartz Rounds within existing members, as well as to new acute care hospitals and into adjacent healthcare markets such as ambulatory centers, retail health, and virtual/home-based care. We are also looking to strengthen our community of compassionate care champions, who are the clinical leaders running our programs across the globe, and to further develop our Model for Compassionate Care and associated tools and resources. We are looking to build new relationships, collaborations, and partnerships with a wide variety of external organizations and associations who are aligned with our work supporting caregiver well-being and patient/family compassion. Our operational budget is funded approximately 50% by philanthropy, with funds coming from individual, corporate and foundation donors, and 50% by earned revenue, including from our membership. Our vision for the coming decade is to be a global leader in championing compassion for all who seek and provide healthcare.

ABOUT YOU:

You are a clinician leader with a demonstrated commitment to compassionate patient care and supporting the healthcare workforce through your clinical practice, scholarship, professional roles and values. You are established as a leader in healthcare workforce well-being and/or compassionate patient care looking for an opportunity to have a national, systems-level impact. You have academic and practical knowledge of the stressors facing today's healthcare delivery system and workforce. You are fluent in the current research and literature on burnout, workforce well-being, patient-caregiver communication, and/or compassionate care and have contributed yourself to that body of work. You have experience as a team member and leader driving improvements in patient safety, quality outcomes, patient experience, health disparities, or teamwork. You have significant leadership experience in developing programs and business opportunities that materially contribute to the growth and performance of your organization. You are a flexible, consensus builder; a respectful team player who connects with the organization's mission; and a strong communicator who can effectively interact with key stakeholders, including the Board of Directors, healthcare leaders of peer organizations, and clinical leaders of various disciplines across existing and potential members. You're agile, adaptive and want to be part of a high performing, mission-driven and growing organization striving to create a better healthcare world grounded in compassion.

ABOUT THE WORK:

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) will be part of the senior leadership team. This is a unique opportunity for MD and RN/Patient Care Service leaders who believe in the mission and vision of the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare, and have a track record of developing, implementing and growing programs and relationships. The ideal candidate profile includes:

--- Ideal for candidates wanting a role in an internationally respected healthcare nonprofit dedicated to advancing compassionate care, with opportunity for growth & development over time

--- Experience with Schwartz Center and other caregiver-support and well-being programs preferred

--- Work is primarily remote, with periodic in-person leadership and staff meetings, retreats, and Center event

--- Commitment to travel at least 10-15 times annually

--- Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in healthcare delivery and administration

--- MD, DO, RN/APN, or another clinical professional degree required.

--- MBA, MPH, MHA, PhD or other advanced degree preferred

--- Open to job sharing of this portfolio between two exceptional part-time candidates; potential good fit for clinicians or leaders looking to maintain a part-time clinical practice, teaching, research, or other administrative role

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Thought Leader

--- Present publicly about our work and programs at conferences, webinars, podcasts, panels, and in interviews with various media hosts/reporter

--- Publish our work/programs, research studies, & opinion/thought piece

--- Serve on national panels and collaboratives that are related to the Center's core mission

--- Serve as a key contributor on the Schwartz Center Leadership Team (LT) and actively contribute to the strategic plan and related initiative

--- Work with external researchers/experts to further document benefits of Schwartz Rounds, Schwartz Center programs, and compassionate care, including refinement & wider adoption of compassion measurement tool

--- Convene task forces and advisory groups as needed to advance thought leadership and potential program development

Program Partner(with Sr Director of Programs, Program Team & Member Operations):

--- Assess the performance of Schwartz Rounds and other existing programs and design modifications that strengthen engagement, enhance impact, and improve perceived value to member

--- Formal publication-quality studies and evaluations (usually with outside firm)

--- Individual entity assessment, evals, data, capture of best practices, and case studie

--- Research interest-group with Schwartz Center members, and with the Point of Care Foundation in the UK

--- Identify, research, and assist in the development of new and innovative programs that support healthcare members and their evolving needs, build revenue, and further our mission

--- Assist in development of program content, training materials, curriculum, & implementation plan

--- Deliver and co-facilitate member trainings, course offerings, and workshops as needed

--- Develop program & training evaluation tools to measure program impact

--- Identify themes/topics, invite and prep speakers, facilitate and moderate the Compassionate in Action Webinar series and Conference

--- Participate in nomination review & finalist selection process for our recognition program

Ambassador:

--- Serve as clinical face of the Center, with a primary focus on driving membership & Schwartz Rounds growth

--- Cultivate relationships with national organizations, associations, societies, other non-profits with similar missions to leverage the Schwartz Center and Schwartz Rounds word-of-mouth referrals and spread

--- Connect with both C-suite and clinical/program champions at individual hospitals, systems, and adjacent healthcare market entities to increase awareness, adoption, and retention

--- With the Senior Director of Programs, establish a national Member Advisory Council of key clinical and administrative champions that can advise on our Schwartz Rounds portfolio and tactics, our Community of Compassionate Care Champions strategy, and evolving member program need

--- With CEO and COO, establish more formal partnerships, affiliations, collaborations with a variety of entities aligned with our Model for Compassionate Healthcare and our work

--- With CEO and Chief Development Officer (CDO), assist with cultivating individual, major gift, and corporate giving relationship

--- With CDO, seek funding from outside foundations and government agencies, supporting this work throughout the grant process lifecycle

Administrative:

--- Manage one physician contractor

--- Has oversight of projects and initiatives under scope and any future clinical direct report

Qualifications

WE'RE A GOOD FIT IF YOU HAVE:

--- MD, DO, RN/APN (required)

--- MBA, MPH, MHA, PhD (preferred)

--- Track record of building and implementing effective organizational programs with documented sustained growth and impact

--- Experience in developing collaborative partnerships and relations, locally & nationally

--- Strong foundational knowledge of the drivers of compassion as defined by our Definition & Model for Compassionate Healthcare

--- Deep understanding of research, literature & strategies for improving provider/healthcare worker wellness, provider-patient communication and/or patient/family experience

--- Ability to link Schwartz Center's work to patient safety, quality, DEIB & teamwork effort

--- Desire to keep abreast of healthcare issues & trends related to our mission

--- Excellent communication skills, including track record of publications and oral presentation

--- Ability to think critically and creatively

--- Skills and experience with group facilitation and discussion leadership

--- Ability to work as part of a team and manage across roles, with strong interpersonal skill

--- High standards in communicating with teammates, members, customers, and donor prospect

--- High degree of initiative, self-drive, and sound independent judgment
